However, many of his most important texts did not appear until decades after his death. Both the famous twentieth-century Marxists and the famous critics of Marx knew a rather incomplete Marx. Moreover, the early posthumous editions were not very accurate, sometimes quite misleading. Philology and critical editions became crucial for reading and interpreting Marx's texts. The Necessary Connection Between Understanding Theory,

  When discussing Marx, most of us assume that we know the gist of what Marx was trying to say. However, many of his most important texts did not appear until decades after his death. Both the famous twentieth-century Marxists and the famous critics of Marx knew a rather incomplete Marx. Moreover, the early posthumous editions were not very accurate, sometimes quite misleading. Philology and critical editions became crucial for reading and interpreting Marx's texts. Only with the new MEGA (Marx Engels Gesamtausgabe) do we have the tool for a new reading of Marx.
